![]() The score isn't freely available but you can find images of it throughout the internet. ![]() This won Best Edition 2014 in the German Music Publisher's Association. I also like being able to see everything that I'm working on at a glance. It's very helpful for me to be able to drag things around, pixel by pixel, until they're exactly where I want them. I'm VERY detail oriented and OCD in a visual sense. I'm capable of working like that but I really don't think it would work for me. My final thought is, based on my experience with it, I didn't care for it personally. ![]() It's forcing you to explore a new paradigm in content creation, whether that's an application or music. I like to think that it's a good chance to get yourself acquainted more with programming, at least a little bit, something which certainly can't hurt. Especially if I weren't planning on publishing my music professionally because then my above point wouldn't be as big of an issue. So if my choice were between the two, I would choose Lilypond just for that reason alone. Of course, without having dived in deep, that may be a faulty impression. That may just be me but the ones I've seen just haven't been to my liking. PERSONALLY, I haven't seen a score, that I knew was created with Lilypond, that I liked and thought looked good. I've already done plenty of coding in the past so the way it works wasn't really foreign to me. I'm already an expert Finale user so I didn't NEED to, but I wanted to see what it's really about. I finally tried it (like, REALLY tried it) a couple weeks ago. In short, yes, it's worth the effort in order to get beautiful scores. If you need to do fancy or complicated things then that stuff can require some patience but fortunately the Lilypond community is very active and incredibly friendly/helpful (see my article for examples of this). Go through the tutorial, use Frescobaldi, and in no time you'll have working scores. That's just not something you can get with any other engraving software.īut of course you might not ever have that need but then again who knows? But knowing you are using a platform that can grow in any direction you want to go is a good feeling and makes for a nice investment in your future.Īlso, it is actually pretty easy to produce simple scores. Because this is going online someday the scores must be perfect or nearly so without any additional tweaking whatsoever. ![]() But I am faking my way through it creating a massive music generating program that also creates Lilypond files that are then compiled into scores. When I started the project I wasn't a programmer. Here's a link to an article I wrote about how I'm using it on a huge project I'm working on. In other words you don't have to be an engraver to use it.Īlso, because it is a markup language (and thus a text file) this gives you a ton of power with the way you can generate scores. The key feature is that of all the engraving programs out there, Lilypond will produce the best looking scores out of the box without requiring all the tweaking that normally comes with engraving. There are so many things that Lilypond can do across so many different types of music that makes it the easy choice. And using something like Frescobaldi takes a lot of the pain away from using it. ![]()
